All of its vastness, beauty, characters, stories, and goofy bugs fit nicely onto the Switch, where it runs at a good, steady framerate and resolution. The addition of motion controls are handy unless you plan to be a melee fighter, and amiibo support is a nice touch, but neither is really a game changer. Rocket League is a golden example of turning a good idea into something truly amazing. Even if those friends are AI, Star Allies still brings frantic four-player fun that's continually a blast, thanks to countless ally combinations and a wonderful charm. Its scenic settings, crazy, over-the-top final boss battle, and catchy soundtrack make it a perfect package that only gets better when using stylish team attacks to destroy everything in your path. Platinum Games proves once again that they are the masters of the genre, with a combat system that rewards players for both being aggressive, and defensive at the same time, thanks to its brilliant Witch Time mechanic that slows down time on a perfectly timed dodge. The spectacular combat is punctuated by unbelievable moments of sheer spectacle, and some of the most impressive boss fights on the Switch. The farming life sim is wonderfully open ended, letting you forge your own country path with fishing, fighting, farming, and falling in love. For four years and counting, Yacht Club has put so much care into making every pixel of Shovel Knight into a perfect tribute to classic games, and every new expansion manages to bring new and exciting mechanics that keep things interesting. With Treasure Trove, you get not only the original game and the expansions released so far, but also everything that will come out in the future. Its 2D platforming is some of the best and toughest since Super Meat Boy, with levels that are as challenging to figure out as they are satisfying to complete. Hidden throughout those levels are a wealth of secrets and collectibles, some of which push the skills it teaches you to the absolute limit, along with enough end-game content to keep you playing for dozens of hours. But the greatest triumph of Celeste is that its best-in-class jumping and dashing is blended beautifully with an important and sincere story and an incredible soundtrack that make it a genuinely emotional game, even when your feet are planted firmly on the ground. Mario has a gun? Similarly to the Final Fantasy franchise, many of Xenoblades gameplay mechanics carry over to each release in the series, however, each game holds its own original story. Battles have an engaging rhythm to accompany the many layers of complexity they hold, and the game has more than enough variety to encourage exploration. There's a considerable amount of game to be played here, and plenty of Switch owners will probably be busy spending time with this massive JRPG well into 2018. New players will adore stomping through thep vivid and vast new worlds, while seasoned veterans will stick around after the credits to unlock the hundreds of challenges that await their skill and dexterity. To put it succinctly, Super Mario Odyssey is pure, sublime joy and one of the best Super Mario games ever made. It tells an epic story, as you glide, cook, and battle your way across a beautifully ruined version of Hyrule. It helped reinvigorate The Legend of Zelda in a way that fans had only dreamt of, easily propelling it to the number one spot on our list and in our hearts.
